Single artwork: Acrylic on canvas landscape of Kampung, Indonesia

ARTIST STATEMENT

Inspired by thoughts of home, I was drawn to representing where I was living overseas. I wanted to do this artwork as the current pandemic we live in restricts travelling and isolating me from my Dad who lives overseas, in a place I used to feel at home in. I wanted to create a piece that resembled this place so I no longer had to physically travel to feel at home, but instead could step into the artwork and sense that familiar feeling of home. My Dad took the original photo; a place I have warm childhood memories of.

ARTWORK PROCESS

I wanted my work to feel as if you could walk right into the artwork and be in Kampung, Indonesia, where I previously lived. My father still lives in Indonesia and I hadn't seen him for years, due to the pandemic. Using a photograph taken by him, I turned his photographic image into a painting. The painting was completed by drawing the source image onto the canvas, colour blocking and then painting fine detail.
