ARTIST STATEMENT

'Portrait of Her' is a caricature of a disconnected wealthy woman dripping with jewels and ruffles. Utilising the production of luxuries – she is slowly being turned into a grotesque creature due to her consumption of fashion and jewels at the expense of her fellow women. Her face is taken over with features of a boar and a cat as a representation of greed and a cat being associated with feminine energy. Inspired by Del Kathryn Barton representation of women as divine beings, I took inspiration from modern fantasy drawing exaggerating features in a stylistic way to morph creatures together.

ARTWORK PROCESS

Something I am passionate about is textile waste in the fast fashion industry and the unethical ways in which big companies make their clothes. Using this idea, I highlighted consumerism and feminism by experimenting with a range of media focusing my activism, manifested as the idea of critiquing rich people, specifically women, who ignore the suffering of their own kind. I then came up with the idea of 'Portrait of Her' communicating greed to support my stance on the fast fashion industry.
