ARTIST STATEMENT
Dysmorphia explores my experience with body dysmorphia and anxiety. The amalgamation of limbs and faces represent the pushing, pulling and distortion of my self-image. The internal aspects of these anxieties leak out of the painting and into the external display. The mess of personal grooming objects invites the viewer to engage with a superficial representation of my insecurities. Exploring a perceived vanity through the literal physical display of a vanity with the chaos of my personal items disturbing this specious interpretation. The painting combined with the installation of my own bedroom creates a juxtaposition between my perceived appearance and reality.
ARTWORK PROCESS
The work was developed from digital photographs taken with tripod, digitally manipulated to develop a composition that has been painted with gouache. The canvas painting is installed on a white vanity covered in a mess of personal objects - a replication of the student's own personal space.
