Raindrops Video
Stop motion video, plastic bottle lids and audio

ARTIST STATEMENT

“Raindrops” captures the essence of rain falling on a puddle by echoing Andy Goldsworthy’s radial patterns and Jonathan Jones’s repetitive symbolistic display. “Raindrops” counteracts the ephemeral with the permanence of plastic. The media -through stop motion video - engages audiences to consider the lasting effects of plastic on the environment and the impact of an individual. The intricate patterns depict journeys through time including the falling raindrops, the reverberations of the Goldsworthy artwork through colour and shape, and the multi-generational impact plastic can cause in the environment. “Raindrops” challenges the audience to consider their effect on the environment.

ARTWORK PROCESS

Inspired by Andy Goldsworthy ‘Raindrops’ was created by sourcing a large supply of plastic lid bottles, colour coordinating them and using pliers to cut them to accentuate their shape. The lids were then placed in a radial pattern of concentric circles, echoing the shape of rain drops into puddles. Using the stop motion technique dozens of photos were then taken and placed into an editing app and edited into a seamless video. Sound was then recorded using a wet sponge and a sink to create the sound of water droplets. This recording was spliced to fit the video.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Naomi Stephens

I have always loved art as it has always been a part of me, however technology has not. As an artist I have always been drawn to multimedia, textile artworks so creating a stop motion video was out of my comfort zone and provided a new challenge and a very steep learning curve. Despite this, my need to challenge myself is so integral that I had to keep the technological aspect of the artwork and continue with the original idea. Perseverance and support from special people in my life is one of the only reasons that the artwork was completed.
