Herding Evolution Sculpture
Three sculptures of sheep that each represent different stages of the evolution of technology in society.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Herding Evolution explores how societal culture has been influenced by the continuous evolution of technology that has spread throughout everyday life. The concept of being herded formed the symbolism of the sheep, implying that evolution is not always a choice and can be forced upon society whether wanted or not, but also to follow, meaning that people are willing to be moulded into a new society. All three sculptures symbolize different ideas, with the use of colour in one piece juxtaposing a limited colour palette in another to clearly distinguish the process of change caused by such evolution.

ARTWORK PROCESS

The process for creating this artwork began with exploring how artists manipulate different medias to create new ways of expressing their intended meaning. I investigated the work of Patricia Piccinini, who bases her artworks off of the feelings people experience in different societal situations. I then began to experiment with building different shapes and forms which were fused with inspiration from the work of Carolyn Watson’s style of material manipulation. I started to use different materials and mediums to create variety and contrast nature and technology with each other.
