ARTIST STATEMENT
‘Beautiful Destruction’ explores the concept of ecological destruction that occurs because of human interaction and involvement as a result of tourism. I personally have experienced how the reefs are treated with disrespect and how we are not actively trying to reduce the damage. We continue to interact with the environment and persist in littering instead of appreciating the beauty of this world. I wanted to express this by creating an artwork that motivates change. We need to appreciate and look after the world around us. You are part of the problem, but you can make a change.
ARTWORK PROCESS
Nylon rope collected from local beaches was accessed and wool crocheted them into coral-like structures. The coral was arranged in a way that was aesthetically pleasing and then was attached to cardboard and placed into a fish tank. Sand was scattered on the bottom of the tank to cover the cardboard and the tank was filled with water. An audience then interacted with the piece, touching it, ripping it, and ultimately destroying it. This conveyed the concept of ecological destruction because of human interaction.
