The Sight Installation
Assemblage on clear acrylic

ARTIST STATEMENT

It is said that the eyes are windows to the soul. 'The Sight' communicates the undesirable view I see in a world where my eyes are really the contact lenses I must wear, to actually see. As I consume and dispose of contact lenses and packaging daily, perhaps this is the work of my guilty conscience, a lingering reminder of my awareness, yet ignorance. The panorama of contact lens packaging is recontextualised as a window to depict a pixelated landscape. I invite the viewer to look through this window to observe this act of consumerism, and question their own consciousness.

ARTWORK PROCESS

I collected my used contact lens packaging over a year. An image of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch was pixelated on Adobe Photoshop, then used as a reference. The colour of each pixel of the manipulated image was mixed and painted with acrylic paint on the concave part of every contact lens package. Found personal objects of embroidery string, sewing thread and dried contact lens were arranged to somewhat camouflage within the painted landscape. The lens packages were assembled and glued together in the composition of a ‘canvas’ on a sheet of clear acrylic which sits out from the wall.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Renee Lau

I find inspiration through the fascinating connection between humans and the earth. My practice expresses this fascination and explores more deeply into the connection through sculptural forms, as well as the influences of historical backgrounds. I primarily work through cultural contexts; however, I have chosen to communicate my personal perspective in this work as a recognition of my journey and it's impacts on my personal contribution to the current socio-environmental issues prevalent in today's society.
