ARTIST STATEMENT
The phenomenon of light pollution is one of the prime reasons for the rapid decline of many pollinating moth species, with the insects experiencing forms of low flight-to-light propensity and delayed reproduction. Incandescent Lepidoptera depicts a common table and lamp, encrusted in bejewelled handmade moths who are entranced by a deceitful light source. These adorned creatures symbolise the ever-growing battle between nature's pollinators and the artificial planet that they call home, an ever-looping cycle that could ultimately lead to their demise.
ARTWORK PROCESS
I used a second-hand table and lamp which I touched up and painted white as well as using gold on the legs of the table. The moths were made of white clay (all 231) with the ones out of the light having their wings out while in the light have their wings closed. I glued over 11,000 fake clear and coloured rhinestones on the moths as well as glitter and as for presentation, a small LED light was placed inside to insinuate light coming off it. The sculpture was photographed in a variety of site specific locations.
