ARTIST STATEMENT

This work symbolises identity, and the aspects of it that form us to be individual and unique. In the mirror ball, colours and lines have been used to create an abstract self-portrait. The light blue lines have been used to show the interconnectedness between each ‘experience’. Yellows, blues, greens and purples are used to create a colourful reflection of identity. The small patch in the centre of the mirror ball starkly contrasts with the rest where there are details of my face. The audience is invited to explore all the small details within the painting and consider what their mirror ball would look like.

ARTWORK PROCESS

The round canvas was ‘primed’ using a base grey. Rows were painted on top of the grey to give direction and outline where each tile should be placed. After the outlines were created, each individual tile was painted within the lines. Each tile was then painted with the designated colour. Every tile had a selected colour that would give the painting a three-dimensional look. In the midsection, a tiny portrait was sketched to reflect the aspect of a mirrorball. After each tile was painted the previous outlines were traced over in a light blue colour to make each tile pop.
