ARTIST STATEMENT
Can distortion of religion and sexuality help us see them as equal importance in life? The idea of sexual identity outside the generic guidelines of religion being sinful, is fuelled by the outdated and unclear believes that is biblical Christianity. Thus, Sinful Gesticulation. Challenging Christianity by empowering one of its core sins. The deep toned swirling gestural background influenced by the LGBTQ+ song This Is Me (remix) represents one’s pride accompanied by warm toned plastered cloth draped over, symbolising religious use of clothing to cover up a sin. Creating a connection through abstraction to see them as one intertwined together.
ARTWORK PROCESS
To create the artwork, I listened to a song and allowed it to inspire gestures with my body using paint to show a symbolic meaning of the song. Once dry I clear coated it to bring back the depth in the colour. I then dipped a large cloth into plaster and draped it over top. Once it was set, I cut the cloth to the size of the boards, then wrapped it around the edges and used staples to keep it in place. *originally 3 boards but cut to 2 for size restrictions*
