Brachium 1x ink on canvas, 1x pencil drawing on canvas
Two works that capture the rotation of the shoulder joint & the muscular skeletal structures of the arm.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Brachium captures the limitations of the human body. Inspired by Damien Hirst & George Bridgeman, Brachium pays homage to artists who precede me. I aim to exemplify 21st century anatomical understanding, documenting knowledge of the arm as a force and a mechanism. The contraction and relaxation of the muscles in a body are the forces that make us walk, talk, and illustrate. Peeling back layers of skin, my illustrations reveal the muscular skeletal structures at work during a shoulder rotation. Brachium pushes the boundaries of scientific illustration, encouraging a relationship between abstraction and realism to dissect scientific phenomena.

ARTWORK PROCESS

The ink arc was created by rotating the shoulder joint to drag printing ink across the canvas. The repeated arm drawings were digitally drawn then transferred onto canvas via projection. Each repetition has been altered to reveal a focal point of the arm's anatomy as it rotates. The focal points emphasise form, musculature & skeletal structures.
