Emotional Rollercoaster Painting
A series of three acrylic paintings on canvas.

ARTIST STATEMENT

When we think of abuse as a social issue, physical, domestic, or sexual abuse often comes to mind. Emotional abuse is often overlooked. Three forms of emotional abuse are presented in this series: gaslighting, manipulation and control. By portraying the marionette as the victim, the audience experiences the helplessness felt by victims. The red thread symbolises underlying mental health issues; if unwilling to get help, these issues can drive abuse. This series seeks to provoke discussion and draw attention for stronger community action.

ARTWORK PROCESS

It is clear that our society doesn't understand what emotional abuse is, nor the effects it has on victims. As I reflected on feelings from my personal experience with emotional abuse, I channelled this knowledge into a body of work. I manipulated acrylic paints on canvas in an effort to educate and create awareness about this social issue. I wanted to create a series that is confronting and thought-provoking, as well as humanising.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Liliana Fuenzalida

Completing senior Visual Art has been like an extended therapy session for me. Working in a personal context has required vulnerability, a characteristic that I am not usually comfortable exhibiting. Art has drawn out my personal experiences and empowered me to express my emotions visually.
