ARTIST STATEMENT
Damage invites audiences to consider their impact on others, both physically and mentally. Our relationships and interactions can have a lasting effect. The audience heavily influences Damage, as I am handing over all artistic control. How do others impact our heart? A concept explored by allowing the audience to either destroy or assist my heart. I invited people within my school community to ‘add’ to my artwork. No further instructions were given. The outcome is entirely in the hands of the audience, relinquishing all creative control.
ARTWORK PROCESS
I created a papier mache heart using masking tape and masking tape to build the general structure. This was removed later to fit in the blood bags. The fake blood was created using watered-down black, cool and warm red acrylic paint. The blood was divided into three freezer bags to ensure it didn’t all flow out from one puncture. Next, the heart was papier-mache close. Lastly, I painted the heart to look more realistic, then a sprayed gloss medium over the top to give the appearance of being wet. The recording of the installation was filmed and edited.
