ARTIST STATEMENT
From a young age, the ocean has been an important part of my life. 'The Magical Life of the Ocean' is a painting which explores the contradicting emotions which emerge from the water. The rhythm of the waves is calming and meditative, and this is reflected in the hues of the painting. Lost in the waves, the stresses of daily life go out with the tide. 'The Magical Life of the Ocean' is my painted perspective when I dive under a wave – I am alone and in the ocean’s control, surrounded by its energy and purity.
ARTWORK PROCESS
Through studying and experimenting with several media, I developed a drawing of an underwater scene which I then recreated onto a large-scale canvas. I created the artwork by using acrylic paint on a large canvas in order to help represent the power and strength of the ocean. I applied many layers, starting with a vibrant, gradient, sunset inspired background to finer detailed brushstrokes, in order to develop depth and create movement.
