ARTIST STATEMENT
Within art, does the artist truly put themselves into their work? Courteous Direction aims to take advantage of the contemporary concept of ephemeral. Ephemerality means a short-lived artwork, which allows the artist to release the need for perfectionistic control and, in this particular instance, entrust the audience with creating and finalising the piece. Allowing the audience to participate in the making removes the artist's need for perfection. Removing control makes it easier to accept the imperfections of their creations. The artwork is a self-portrait, bringing a personal connection between the audience, artwork and artist.
ARTWORK PROCESS
Self portrait was created using pencil and ink on canvas. Audience was then invited to add marks using acrylic paint and a variety of textured applicators. The final artwork depicts the before and after. Showing how powerful a piece can be when the artist relinquishes artistic control.
