ARTIST STATEMENT
The combination of the drawing, sculptural form and projection of shadows culminates depth and further sensory experience and invites the audience to understand the connection between emotions, the brain, and functions of the human body. While the first artwork brings attention to the processes in the brain that contribute to emotion, the second brings light to symptoms of intense emotions. Conveying these concepts together by overlaying the distress of the lungs to the brain deepens the connection between these processes. The negative space created through shadows and light over the drawing helps communicate this intention while adding extra visual interest.
ARTWORK PROCESS
Using graphite pencil to create depth and tone I created a compositional arrangement exploring the brain with protruding body parts radiating from the nerve centre. I left the background as a void with the intention to project shadows on top of the drawing. To create the sculptural lung forms, I arranged string into the shape of lungs, creating tension in it then using wire to secure the shape. I brought the two dimensional and three dimensional work together by arranging the lungs above the drawing to cast a shadow and sense of space in the body.
