ARTIST STATEMENT
‘Beware the nightmare’ was influenced by Caroline Rothwell’s Comparative Anatomy series, I have used her modelling methods, particularly her use of skeletal forms and heads that don’t belong on their bodies to construct my own creatures. In the photograph the creature on the far right has its head upside-down, the middle creature has hand like claws and hooves with a bipedal posture, and the far left creature has a lamb’s body with a wolf’s skull. The sculptural forms were created to evoke feelings of confusion and unease and to prompt questions about identity.
ARTWORK PROCESS
The creatures are based on the images I drew and printed onto a pillowcase called 'Sweet Dreams' portraying creatures found in nightmares. Turning theses creatures into three dimensional objects was a challenge as the scale and media is small. The size of the forms creates intimacy with the viewer and draws you into the modeled felt and white clay objects. The idea to photograph these creatures as portraits is to narrate the reality of a dream or a nightmare on a large scale. The photograph overwhelms the small creatures and creates an emotional catalyst for the viewer.
