ARTIST STATEMENT
Paying homage to traditional orthodox iconography, 'Sancta Trinitas' explores the veneration of ‘icons’ and how it has morphed from religious worship to the worship of physical objects. Communicated through such symbols as the mobile-phone representing technology, is centred as the pillar of modern society. Whilst credit-cards references capitalism and the coffee-cup, symbolises materialism, the layout conveys the biblical Holy Trinity: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. In addition, the gold leaf is emblematic of the gilded cage of consumption we have been trapped in through focusing upon purely materialistic pleasures. Whilst religious worship is still relevant - times have changed.
ARTWORK PROCESS
Initially inspired by the methodology of traditional Greek Orthodox iconographers, I was heavily influenced by the consumer culture that encapsulates society. As such, I decided to use my friends, modern youths, as the subject matter for this series of works as they are most affected by society’s collective shift to materialism. After researching iconography, I opted for a semi-realistic painting style, with the figures consisting of defined, yet gradual tonal changes achieved through layered applications of synthetic polymer paint. I also explored colour symbolism within orthodoxy and created a gilded background with red bole undercoat and gold leaf finish.
