ARTIST STATEMENT

The unknown is ubiquitous and can never vanish from view completely. Through my attempt to represent the unknown by giving form to spiritual and external images, I have both explored and expanded my own definition of it. "The gaps between light and dark" encourages the viewer to do the same by presenting the unknown's connection to the world as a sort of dual state. The projection of shadows emerging from the wooden plane is metaphorical of the parallels of reality. The shadows remind us that the unknown is unquantifiable and intrinsically attached to what is known and what we are.

ARTWORK PROCESS

Inspired by Guillaume Néry's short film documentary about a free diver, this work pushed my concept about how small we are in contrast to the world around us, and how we must explore what is unfamiliar to expand our perceptions of it. I initially sketched spontaneous patterns and metaphysics through the investigation of light. I also explored auditory experimentation using water. Once I experimented with these elements it was important to refine these visually to successfully present the juxtaposition of light and dark, big and small and deeper understanding of the intangible unknown.
