ARTIST STATEMENT
Do you reflect on childhood memories, wishing you could experience them again? My nervousness towards graduation and beginning a new chapter in life has provoked introspection and sentimentality of my childhood. The repetition of my teddy-bear amongst the triptych highlights the connection with my past-self, and memories of Grandma's hand. The chest holds the treasure of irreplaceable moments. When opened, it provokes the audience to reminisce and connect with their inner-childhood self. The dull “tick” of a clock emphasises the harsh reality of time progressing. Time clicks away, the trunk decays, deep inside, our precious childhood memories last.
ARTWORK PROCESS
The inevitability of change inspired 'Alemurity'. I drew a triptych, including a self-portrait as a baby, using the symbolism of time, and repetition of my teddy bear. Teddy and I experienced life together and despite time ticking away, through him I hold a connection with my past self. Graphite’s subdued tones capture faded memories, juxtaposed with purple’s boldness, representing the joy and durability of experiences. Recording a clock was challenging, I used a copyright free recording to symbolise time and encourage audience curiosity. The chest indicates treasure as it contains the triptych and objects associated with my childhood.
