ARTIST STATEMENT

Expansion occurs today more than ever; as technology evolves, we continue to create everything bigger and better with little regard for the consequences. Gentrification is the process of this consumerist course. Run-down buildings are being demolished and transformed into often luxurious, apartment blocks. Though gentrification is a positive process in principle, it can dislocate the communities of prior residents, increase the cost of living in affected areas, drive lower-income groups out of their residences and increase population in already highly populated areas. ‘Gentrification’ examines the possible effects of this issue on the Gold Coast.

ARTWORK PROCESS

Photographs were taken of old farmhouses and beachside buildings, making sure to leave a lot of room above the property to fit in the transformation of the old building into a high-rise. Separate layers were created in Photoshop for the roofs of each house, duplicating them and stacking them atop one another; For the moving image - Adobe Photoshop frame animation tool to transform the image into a GIF.
