ARTIST STATEMENT
The Bachelorette, Plutos explores the concept of a woman and her place in a patriarchal society.Through exploring a contemporary context, the piece explores existentialism, bodily autonomy and feminism in the 21stcentury. Feminine destruction and rage is a central theme, that seeks to illustrate ‘the woman scorned’. My focus question is ‘How do artists appropriate inspiration from work and styles of the past to create something contemporary and unique?’ Although it can be argued women have made great strides in our contemporary society, people are constantly pushing back against the movement, taking away women's reproductive rights being just one of hundreds of different tragedies endured
ARTWORK PROCESS
The Bachelorette, Plutos is a fabric wearable art piece that has been created using a range of fibers such as felt, wool and embroidery thread. The soft, sculptural form has been designed in the formation of the female reproductive organs, complete with individually crocheted strands representing female menstruation. The soft sculptural uterus was then embellished with intricate beading and other delicate details of lace and ribbon. The wearable art piece was entirely created by hand.
