ARTIST STATEMENT
By exploring aspects of the human condition, a personal response to place using expressive mark-making is depicted in my paintings. Individualised symbols such as the boat house, which represents home, and the headless figure, which represents mental or emotional disturbance, are derived from photos taken while visiting Lake Cootharaba and Boreen Point. The combination of an impending storm which built in intensity over the day, the wide grey lake, and the lonely foreshore created an atmosphere that triggered a deep reaction within me. My expressive imagery explores my personal journey and/or memories of place, and shares human and physiological experience and emotions.
ARTWORK PROCESS
From original photographs taken at Boreen Point and the foreshore of Lake Cootharaba, I created two screen prints, which I then exploited and manipulated through layering, blurring, disrupting, and obliterating to create a series of expressive and symbolic paintings.
