ARTIST STATEMENT
Have you ever felt like you don’t fit in? Korelian was created inspired by a question I often ask myself, "what if I was the norm?". Growing up in a predominantly white country, I often wondered how I would be different if I grew up in a place where everyone was Korean-Australian. By creating artwork of a combination of both my cultural identities, I was able to imagine this euphoric world. This artwork was inspired by the artist Kirstie Mitchell as her art also comes from a place of imagination and storytelling.
ARTWORK PROCESS
The first step to creating Korelian was sketching a woman in the position I desired and then arranging the flowers so the colours wouldn’t clash. I chose black as the colour of her hair as I believed it would look good against the colourful flowers, allowing the audience's attention to the hair decorations. Finally, I coloured the Hanbok, gave colour to the woman's face and made the finishing touches to the overall artwork. I chose blue, white and red as the colours of the Hanbok as these are the colours of the Korean flag.
