ARTIST STATEMENT
Generational Twitter Conflict (2022) explores the conflict between old and young generations over social media. The work is a diptych, with one panel representing the digital age, and the other representing the pre-digital age. The work imagines a conflict between the post-digital and pre-digital ages. The work was inspired by an argument on “Twitter” in which an older individual argued with a younger individual, blaming each for the troubles in the world. The digital age is crude and hunched over. While the digital age is clothed and in a regal position, symbolic of the way each group views one another.
ARTWORK PROCESS
A rudimentary outline for both panels was first created. Both figures and the abstracted background behind them were outlined. The outline consisted of the posture of both figures and the stereotypes that both groups use against one another. The abstracted background consists of layers of different colours and warm and cool tones, creating a sense of chaos and anger. This is a representation of the chaotic and overwhelming nature of the internet. The work was then refined further, adding more detail, like having the older figure appear sweatier and more overwhelmed, and an audience observing the argument in the background.
