True Spirits Installation
A series/collection of nine acrylic clipboards layered with resin, ink, digital images, and transparent film

ARTIST STATEMENT

Spirituality, the experience of one's own nature deep within, provides the key to this vital relationship with oneself, with others and with our environment. It can also be understood as, and inclusive of, our emotions, attitudes, behaviours and experiences that connect us to our true selves. My multi-layered artwork explores the hidden depths and meanings that link the natural universe to our personalities. Each clipboard transforms written surveys into a visual analysis, a representation of the answers found in the environment: spirit animals provide guidance, protection, power or wisdom, ultimately reflecting a person’s inner spiritual energy and deep inner desire.

ARTWORK PROCESS

Survey was created around central values, attitudes and beliefs of an individual, life experiences, obstacles and ambitions. Initially intended for friends, I used the survey on a holiday cruise, interviewing and photographing 9 random strangers to support my ideas. Inspired by artist Nobuhiro Nakanishi’s use of transparent layers and Mitch Gobel’s exploitation of resins, I applied new knowledge of media to communicate my focus through the creation of a multi-layered object that explores the movement of resin. I have created layers of manipulated transparencies on a familiar object, which invites audience interaction.
