The artwork consists of a round textural landscape which the audience then finger painted on.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Your mind is racing, deadlines are speeding towards you. What do you do? Dealing with contemporary issues like mental health is not talked about enough and ‘Tranquility’ responds to this. It provides people calming with a strategy of mindfulness, a practice where a person becomes fully aware of their body, environment, thoughts, and feelings. The mindfulness of the fingerpainting from the audience allows for the transfer of their feelings onto the landscape. A tranquil audio establishes a calming environment which deepens the audience engagement in mindfulness. So next time you’re overwhelmed what will you do?

ARTWORK PROCESS

First, the white textural landscape was sculpted with rocks, acrylic paint, hot glue, impasto gel and course mediums was created. The audience was encouraged to touch and add purposeful finger-painted marks to illicit a sense of calm. These unplanned marks, over time painted the surface in layers of blue, green and purple. The circle form created the feeling of inclusivity not only in the form, but in the way everyone could access the artwork, from any angle.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Kiahna Thomson

I am a year 12 art student at Trinity College Gladstone, and I enjoy practicing art both in and out of school. I am particularly fond of using mixed media and paint to explore topics like emotions, as well as exploring how colour can be used in different and surprising ways. I hope to study graphic design and business at university next year and become a brand designer.
