ARTIST STATEMENT
Big Blue with Human Vices is a dual artwork that derives from the series 'Unseen Display', comprising of the artworks: Stick, Big Blue, Human Vices and Layered Ocean. The series looks at the levels of the Pioneer River and the experience of its viewer. By looking at sea foam and local architecture, the artist discovered a hidden trolly which bloomed the idea of layers of being seen. Together the works communicate and create the layers of being seen to unseen. Big Blue represents what surrounds the Pioneer River, while Human Vices represents the micro- environment and what cannot be seen within.
ARTWORK PROCESS
The dual artwork is a mixed media display using traditional materials in contemporary ways. The artist wanted to push and change the media in a way that mirrored the unpredictable nature of the natural environment. A focus of layering and water was present in each piece as it not only connected the artworks on a physical level but connected the works on a symbolic level like a river. Big blue was created by collaging images from the Mackay region. Human Vices features water taken directly from the Pioneer River. Displayed together, this artwork invites audience engagement with the pieces.
