ARTIST STATEMENT
I have used the visual codes of charcoal drawing to highlight the beauty of the dancers whilst also commenting on the rigid expectations of the dance world around the body and the required proportions to be an admired dancer. The black and white of the charcoal removes the emotion and identity of the dancer and allows the movement to be the main focus. The use of the tape measure unifies the works and draws the audience in to consider that the dancer's performance is the expression of intense sacrifice.
ARTWORK PROCESS
I took photographs of my friend while dancing and selected images to enlarge and draw in charcoal. Then I added three-dimensional aspects such as a tape measure winding around the dancers bodies.
