ARTIST STATEMENT
As we grow older our body becomes frailer and our mind becomes weaker. Humans are in a constant battle against time which I explore through the process our memories go through as we live and reflect on past experiences. The centre of most memories are people, yet as years pass our ability to remember faces deteriorates and all we have left is the essence of who they were. Dementia is diseases that creates a new confusing reality where a person’s entire life and memory is slowed wiped away until they become a blank slate. The face disappearing is the beginning.
ARTWORK PROCESS
I begun this artwork with mapping out the composition and scale for a continuous artwork. I used reference images I took of myself beforehand to sketch an outline of the silhouette, features, and predominant shadows and highlights. I did a watered-down acrylic wash of burnt umber across the canvas and then mixed and painted on the base colours for the skin, hair, and sweater in desaturated tones. After painting the shadows and highlights, I realised that the artwork was too desaturated and looked flat, so I went back in with a bright red for highlights and yellow for the glitching.
