ARTIST STATEMENT

“Death Bed: In use” is the link between the fear and the reality of being human as we let go of all attachments. Many artists throughout history have explored death and loss of their loved ones. As the artists I have explored this with my own flesh and blood through imagery taken on the death bed. This series focuses on the phases of deterioration of the living body. The physical phases of death are explored and its effect on the human body. The audience is invited to notice the fading, discolouration, and decomposition of the flesh, the letting go of character and uniqueness of the

ARTWORK PROCESS

When exploring how the nature of mortality influences the human condition the artist realised the bed is the most common place of death. Previously resolved imagery was applied to panels as individual paintings which were stitched together to create a quilt and pillow slip. The actual bed surface illustrates the thin line between life and death. The gesturally rendered, finger painted skull is a universal symbol of death and mortality and indicative the artists fragile connection with their own mortality.
