Postcards of the Past Installation
20 handmade double-sided postcards, embellished with mixed media that are suspended and projected on top of.

ARTIST STATEMENT

The work aims to commemorate and communicate knowledge about soldiers, from the Gemfields regional in Queensland who enlisted in World War One. The 20 postcards explore the tales of these soldiers through purposeful imagery on that fronts that reflects their fate: return servicemen, discharged, dead or missing person. The backs provide additional details about these individuals: rank, job, family situation and so on, to allow viewers to connect with these men on a personal level. The projected image of the men, is a reminder that these individuals existed, their service to our country mattered and they will not be forgotten.

ARTWORK PROCESS

The designs on the back of the postcards were created through digital media and printed onto the cotton-rag. The postcards were then cut to size. The imagery on the front of the postcards were then created with alcohol ink markers, watercolour, gold leaf and pressed flowers, representing the fates of the soldiers. The back and the front pieces were then sewn together with red thread in order to represent the embroidery present on postcards during this time. The backs were then written on, the postcards were wrapped in string, suspended and the selected image was projected over the top.
