ARTIST STATEMENT

Waiting illustrates cyclical emotional entrapment, serving as a psychoanalysis of my abandonment trauma. The use of acrylic medium grounds Waiting whilst viewers experience an emotional journey. Viewers first perceive the bright lights, symbolic of hope, before being dragged into the central darkness of loneliness. This juxtaposition of colour, inspired by Edvard Munch’s use of colour theory and Louise Bourgeois’ object symbolism, causes viewers to vacillate between hope and loneliness – reflecting my own cycle as I await my estranged mother’s return.

ARTWORK PROCESS

Waiting was initially illustrated as a digital practice of Edvard Munch’s colour theory in Melancholy (1900-01) and Anxiety (1894). Both pieces illustrate an intricate interplay between the comfort of dominant warm colours juxtaposed against hints of blue that make the viewer uneasy. A digital artwork was created off of these principles, conveying my personal message through negative space and universal symbols. Upon the success of this piece, I changed my medium to acrylic in order to further ground the artwork as a tangible experience to its viewers. It was named Waiting to set a tone of loneliness and unfulfilled
