ARTIST STATEMENT

”Have you been paying attention?”… Have you been paying attention to me? To my work? Have you been paying attention to the details? The little things? The Jacky-Winter bird is my cultural Aboriginal totem, which was given to me by my Grandfather. The carvings in this artwork can be seen if you slow down, take a deep breath, and pay attention to the detail. My artwork over time evolved from cutting lino and printing traditionally to now creating artworks that embody the act of carving itself, that give life to the detail and all it represents. My culture exists in those carved lines.

ARTWORK PROCESS

Creating layers of paint to establish a 35 paint- layered, one-meter rounded board. I started with the white paint, each layer of white paint needed 4 hours to dry. The coats of paint had to be even with no texture or air bubbles across the surface. Once enough white coats were applied, the last and final coat of black paint was applied. I then used Lino Tools to carve out the bird taking long and thicker carving strokes around the top of the head, back, wing and belly; and the shorter and thinner carving strokes created that different feather pattern.
