Corruption Sculpture
Paper Mache sculpture with mixed media

ARTIST STATEMENT

‘Corruption’ explores the representation of innocence and purity in artworks and how these are fragile concepts which can be easily destroyed. The sculpture has been created using a paper mache process inspired by Johnson Tsang and Jess Riva Cooper. Tsang has created a series of surrealist ceramic works which challenge thoughts or emotions through abstract sculptures of human heads. Cooper’s works, which use the female lens to communicate folklore myths and environmental issues, inspired the use of painted flowers and greenery to represent innocence and purity. Corruption also uses texture to create visual interest.

ARTWORK PROCESS

1. Carve out Styrofoam head to act as a base for the artwork 2. Apply paper mache to entire head and let dry – repeat until smooth and structured 3. Apply last layer of paper mache with white paper to create a blank canvas 4. Use modelling paste to add texture to entire sculpture 5. Create snake by twisting newspaper around thick craft wire and tape together 6. Paper mache snake until smooth, gesso, paint 7. Carefully bend snake into the head, touch up with paint 8. Use glue to adhere the snake onto the head 9. Add flowers and petals
