‘You hold’ ‘Me together’ Photograph
Two A2 photographs in black and white, collaged together with horizontal lines and a coloured eye.

ARTIST STATEMENT

‘You hold’ ‘Me together’ is a photocollage diptych, depicting my mother and sister. I am passionate about telling their story as it displays the journey of mental health and how they are stronger together, shown through the two pieces creating one. Society pressures those with mental disorders to feel as though they do not have control over who they are, thus collage was utilised to create juxtaposition of how one feels and how others believe they should. My sister has a mask and the support of my mother to guide her through her struggles with mental health.

ARTWORK PROCESS

The artwork was created by cutting up photographs taken on an iPhone and edited in black and white, and colour. Then horizontal lines were cut, then staggered to make the muses’ face distorted. With then the same photograph reglued over the top with only the face glued in the same place, to create a clear contrast. Scissors were used on the cut-outs to create rough edges. The complimentary image is the same black and white photograph used in the initial piece with a coloured eye cut out, that had been crumpled and scrapped to give a weathered look.
