Annie Armstrong
Down Memory Lane Painting
Acrylic on canvas, ink and acrylic on concertina booklets.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Down Memory Lane sums up the theme of chaos in the interpretation of using 'monsters' in the concertina books and canvas. This artwork represents Australian history in order of their centuries (1700s-2000s) and also the imagination of the future century (2100s). The canvas, which also has monsters, shows how all the books are connected through a horrific history. The concertina books were used for their length which to some may look like a film strip or a narrative showing history for people to connect to. Symbolism connected both the books and the canvas together through sugarcane and other representations to show Mackay Heritage.

ARTWORK PROCESS

The concertina books represent stages of our history. Each book was hand drawn with imagery, illustrations, and cartoons. They were then hand coloured with ink and acrylic. The large scale canvas was painted with thick acrylic and depicts monsters and chaos. The concertina books were then displayed on top of the canvas while it lies flat on the display. The art works can be displayed together, or side by side using a table.
