The Haven Sculpture
A triptych of sculptures made from styrofoam, acrylic paint, mâché, 3D printed objects, resin, tubing, wire and rust

ARTIST STATEMENT

The intention of my work was to create futuristic, concrete bunker style dwellings, fabricated worlds that appear uninhabitable. The house surrounded by a barb wire fence infers some notion of life but below the surface are barrels oozing toxic waste amongst disused old generator parts. The dystopian narrative is further established with objects frozen in time such as a skull infused into the concrete, a decaying water tower reclaimed by nature, assault-tank, and oil pump. This realism allows the audience to be immersed in futuristic possibilities yet evoking a sense of the now with war and environmental degradation ever present in our world.

ARTWORK PROCESS

The styrofoam packaging was layered with texture and painted with acrylic then the process of adding detail began. I made a house out of core foam board with details such as sand and rocks for texture. Using my 3D printer, I printed objects in PLA such as skulls, barrels, oil pumps, tank, and crushed car. These were coated in rust base paint and patina liquid to create the atmosphere of dereliction. Resin, mixed with green enamel paint was poured into barrels and around the scene. Lastly, stands at varying heights were constructed for display and to enhance the dystopian narrative.
