ARTIST STATEMENT
‘Scouts’ Trilogy’ is inspired by my personal context of degenerative memory and how that affects my perception. Through an exploration of colour and form, I intended to create works that represented my ideas on memory. I have synthesized Etel Adnan’s use of colour, Cresside Collette’s technique, and Jacqueline Scotchers use of motif. I challenged myself to fill in the blanks of memory with unnatural colours, to represent the way memories warp to be false versions of themselves. The constant repetition of texture is a testament to how I have to constantly revisit my memories to keep them in place.
ARTWORK PROCESS
The artwork process included preliminary mixed media paintings focused initially on abstracting colours of environments. The visual effect of multiple lines to make up a singular imagery became very intriguing to me and inspired my research into textile artists with prominent use of line. Cressida Collette inspired my visual expression to become softer, in a sense, less sharp. I found myself approaching the depiction of landscapes differently, allowing myself to make the organic shapes and embracing the fuzzy-ness of my memory.
