ARTIST STATEMENT
Nature’s intricacy is a combination of predictable perfection and inherent uniqueness. I am exploring the cultural and personal contexts of the mind through my experience with over-stimulation. Emotions are natural and we shouldn’t be scared to show them. Like nature, the brain is fragile and complex, but it can be sustained by keeping a balance between positive and negative feelings. The imitation of nature is shown through the wrapping vines and paper flowers while the textured canvas represents the limbic system in the brain and the natural occurrence of ocean waves. The work communicates the vulnerability of the young mind.
ARTWORK PROCESS
Chicken wire was attached to a backing board and mache used over the surface to build the substrate. Small ceramic facial features were fired and attached to the form. I wove the vines and hand painted them. Paper flowers were also handmade and inspired by our visit to Hiromi Tango's exhibition at the Caloundra Gallery during the stimulus experience. Benefits of art for mental well being were explored with the work expressing ideas around overstimulation.
