ARTIST STATEMENT
Have you ever felt like you didn’t belong? Outsiders explores the concept of identity, considering how key memories and experiences shape our sense of belonging. The focus of my investigation explores the fabric of my identity through personal experiences growing up in different countries and cultures.
As a child I was objectified, excluded, and stereotyped, inspiring deep consideration of acceptance and humanity. Living in Singapore from age 3-15, constant stares and judgement overwhelmed me. Outsiders challenges common misconceptions that the world is an inclusive place, highlighting my personal experiences that identify contemporary problems that oppose this belief.
ARTWORK PROCESS
Outsiders combines fragmented family photographs with words & phrases that describe personal experience. Each photographic piece is mounted on wood, and all pieces are stitched together into their composition.
