ARTIST STATEMENT
‘Through my Eyes’ explores the connection between land and identity on a more personal level. Chuck Close's manipulation of the human form is done to draw the viewer in to view and further examine every individual pixel, which makes up a portrait. Inspired by this approach, I experimented with pixilation and restricted myself to a limited colour palette in order to reflect my original reactions and connections to the stimulus. Highlighting the personal context of this work, I utilised my senior photograph to reflect my connection to a moment in time. Through constant repetition of shapes and patterns I hope to draw my audience in.
ARTWORK PROCESS
I explored concepts of personal connection to place and researched alternate representations of this to inspire Through My Eyes. I utilised colour to represent key places and memories significant to my life, and took inspiration from Chuck Close, Greg Sand and Christine Kim. This inspired my to use my senior school photo - which I drew onto cardboard first - before pixelating the image and apply oil paint and Prismacolour pencil in a methodical application to separate zones of the image. I cut the bottom of the board to emphasise the connection to school and its near end.
