ARTIST STATEMENT

This artwork represents a place that I escape to. My artwork follows my personal experiences of needing to escape from the real world. My artwork was created in the style of Alice in Wonderland; the wacky kind of world that wonderland is gives adventure and creativity. A hat with a world inside helps you view the way I escape from my world. The use of butterflies how they change and adapt on their journey from caterpillar to butterfly. I wanted to include them as I sometimes envy the way they have a set way in life and how they always change to be something beautiful.

ARTWORK PROCESS

To create my 'escape' artwork, I used a variety of materials together. The heaviest part of the artwork is the brim of the hat, this is made with a cut of thin timber. This was used for the hats stability, and for a strong connection for the wire used to hang up the hat. The cylinder of the hat had been constructed with bamboo sticks, cut to the same size and held together with some strings and masking tape. The artwork covered with grey dyed fabric, and the inside had been decorated with floating butterflies, cotton clouds and LED lights.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Amelia

This artwork has a lot of meaning to Amelia, and to a lot of people including fellow students. We all need a place to escape from the stresses of life. A place to feel safe and comfortable. For some people its a physical place, but for others like Amelia, its in our mind. Amelia find sanctuary in her thoughts and imagination. It could be the smallest and tamest of thoughts. Or it is something wonderful and wacky. Either way, it helps Amelia to find my place in a situation.
