Adjustment Disorder Painting
A series of 3 paintings on canvas and 5 paintings on wine bottles

ARTIST STATEMENT

The journey to adulthood brings a plethora of life changes, including how we interact with our surroundings. A bedroom for instance, once a place of joy and playtime for a child, can become a social barrier and a retreat from reality for a young adult, as seen in the paintings. The bottles, however, symbolise my fragility amid the changed family dynamics after my Dad left our house. From an organised four-person household to late nights being our only family time; demoted to couch dinners, chores undone and staying up past midnight. This brings a forced independence, alongside emotional baggage.

ARTWORK PROCESS

Bottles were first primed with gesso, and then painted on with oil and acrylic. Canvases were sketched on, then painted with oil, in a broken brushwork style for each painting. The glass medium is a metaphor for how fragile I have become since encountering this major change.
