ARTIST STATEMENT

Transition and progression are two things that occur simultaneously in any living being's life. My artworks highlights the emotional and physical response to the stimulus of Pallarenda. Through the pertinent use of colour I have communicated my emotional, physical and sensory reaction to the stimulus. I’ve applied these colours through Perspex layers to show the transition of reactions. The base layer mimics the natural scape of Pallarenda overlain with collage and textured application of acrylic paint. The textured paint is applied in a cloudy fashion which pays homage to the forecast of the weather during the experience. The personal context references my personal reactions.

ARTWORK PROCESS

Schmaltzy Memories was created in four phases - the first layer was the base background on paper - utilising mixed media to create memory representations of the stimulus. The three perspex layers were painted on with acrylic and, when layered, create the image of a face. This was created using a template drawing, which was split into sections, layered under the perspex and used to allocate sections of colour to different sections of the face. Each layer represents a different reaction to the initial stimulus; emotional, sensory and physical reactions to place.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Zoe Gilpin

Zoe Gilpin has studied senior Visual Arts for two years and thrives on media experimentation. Zoe prefers to dive straight into the deep end when it comes to art-making, and put marks straight onto the working surface, manipulating the meaning throughout this experimental process. Highly driven by intuition and reaction, Zoe's work often highlights personal reactions to stimulus and explores bold use of colour.
