Heartache Sculpture
Five hearts cast in resin, plaster and clay in 200x200mm frames

ARTIST STATEMENT

Emotions are psychological responses caused by thoughts, feelings and neurochemical changes which evoke degrees of pleasure or displeasure. Heartache symbolises emotions I’ve had to come to terms with while living with a congenital heart disease. Four of these hearts have unique visual language to represent the painful feelings of fragility, brutality, fear, and anguish. However, the central gold heart symbolises the sacredness of the heart, as a vessel for the soul. Heartache provides insight into the emotions I experience every day, whilst also allowing me to reflect on the vitality of my heart, despite its flaws.

ARTWORK PROCESS

I created a silicone mould from 3D printing a heart model. I used the mould to form five identical hearts using resin, plaster, and clay and then I applied their respective alterations. To display the work, I constructed five shadowbox frames to which each heart is attached.
