Lest We Forget Painting with accompanying sculpture
Deconstructed triptych with hat sculpture

ARTIST STATEMENT

Most Aussies know someone who served. Inspired by the annual commemoration of ANZACs, I have encapsulated Australia's cultural grief. The clay ‘slouch’ hat represents all military soldiers; etched is my school's honour roll. The three paintings, portray grief from three unique perspectives; the first canvas depicts a solider whose face, hidden behind shadow, could belong to anyone. The second shows the solider, deconstructed by grief, to a collection of shapes. The third is made of ripped pieces of the mans image; hiding his figure. The abstracted soldiers journey personifies the collective processing of grief our nation continually faces today

ARTWORK PROCESS

The triptych was painted with acrylic paints on canvas. The second panel was overlaid with posca pens and last panel collaged images of the soldier under acrylic paint. The hand-built ceramic hat was covered in underglaze, names of the school ANZAC honor roll etched using sgraffito techniques before glazing firing.
