ARTIST STATEMENT
In every monotonous lifecycle, there’s rebirth and decay. Although recurrently explored through predation or age, a larger lens sees evolution and species, a direction which I have chosen to explore in this artwork. Featuring a painted clay sculpture on a simple decorated canvas, New Sentience conveys this journey of life through the form of mutation and evolution. The sculpture is that of a deer-lion-lizard mutant, and it is seen swimming among a pool of bones that represent the dying past of previous ancestors and all the species that have decayed with it. From death, however, has emerged a new species and a new life-
ARTWORK PROCESS
The process of creating my 3D artwork included the use of scrap wire, tinfoil, hot glue, faux vines, and cat whiskers, as well as prepared materials of a 20x25cm canvas, air-dry clay, and acrylic paint. The sculpture was constructed using a base of thick wire tightly enveloped with layers of tin foil, which clay was later applied onto and hand sculpted. Details, including wired mushrooms topped with hot-glue and protruding eyes, were created using found materials. Acrylic paint was then applied in a careful selection, and the statue was attached to a painted canvas wound in faux vines.
