Human Touch Installation
Painted clay sculptures and found objects arranged on sand under a UV light

ARTIST STATEMENT

This work explores the potential future of coral reefs. Human interruption to natural cycles of life, has resulted in coral bleaching. With the use of plastic and UV lighting, viewers are positioned to initially recognise the beauty of this environment, but later notice the use of materials and loss of colour in the coral, making the true meaning and purpose obvious. This artwork contrasts viewers initial reaction with the harsh reality that is occurring. With the goal of bringing awareness to humans' impact on coral reefs this work aims inspire change to preserve not destroy.

ARTWORK PROCESS

The artwork was created by first sculpting the clay pieces, which were based upon photographs of coral. Once fired, I began painting them with acrylic paint and spray paint. To seal the paint and add gloss, spray varnish was used. Once this process was done, I arranged the sculptures on the sand, which was shaped into a swirl shape and added painted found objects (rubbish). The display was then lit using UV light to give an underwater effect.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Mikayla Parrotta

Mikayla, is currently in Year 12. She was born and raised in Mackay, along with three older sisters. Growing up she spent a lot of time outdoors, either camping, snorkeling, exploring or playing sports. From a young age she has enjoyed creating art, and as she’s gotten older, she has grown to love painting acrylic landscapes of places travelled or memorable locations. This interest has recently become something she wants to pursue afterschool. Next year, Mikayla plans to have a gap year to travel, where she hopes to paint and document significant travel locations.
