The Draining of Nature Print
Large scale etching print and screen-print on fabriano rosapina paper.

ARTIST STATEMENT

This piece incorporates optical art as a metaphor for the effect of technology that can draw you in as time passes unknowingly. This takes away from the landscape which is fragmented and mirrored, also depicting changes of a specific landscape at Cape Hillsborough National Park over two years. The idea of cycles is referenced as we move back and forth from reality to technology and illusions of reality through technology. Cycles is generally related to circles which is why the shape of the illusion within this artwork was chosen as it helps to symbolise the natural cycles that occur.

ARTWORK PROCESS

I began by collaging photographs taken 2 years apart from Cape Hillsborough National Park to demonstrate the change of time. Parts of the landscape were lined up such as horizon lines and other parts were mirrored and off-set to create a fragmented landscape, that is not immediately obvious. This was printed large scale and etched onto plastic. The etching was then printed. A screen-print stencil was then created of an optical illusion and printed in blue over the top of part of the etching. This is designed to draw attention away from the landscape just as technology does.
